Christmas Caroling

Starting in the 1900s caroling itself didn't always involve Christmas, and the ancient tradition of traveling from house to house. Caroling now today and caroling back then  was very different says Daniel Abraham, musicology expert and choral director at American University in Washington, D.C. it also had nothing to do with christmas. Abraham also mentions "Medieval carols were liturgical songs reserved for processionals in the 12th and 13th centuries". Carloling first began in Victorian England, as church carols began to merge with Christian folk music. as it grew more popular caroling would be performed in festivals and eventually became a christian tradition. the most update and most song carol songs in our period are "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "The First Noel" and "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing". Another one is "Joy to the World" which was first sang in the Anglican Church in 1861.

  4. I've never been caroling but i think that since Christmas is over i probably shouldn't just go to peoples houses and start singing... they might think that's a little odd.
